I had the pleasure of meeting with Maria from The Wild Oysters Project this week. The Wild Oysters project is aiming to restore Britain’s seas to health through the restoration of the native oyster.
We met a ten on a sunny yet windy Wednesday morning. The arrangements were to meet in the carpark and plan from there. I arrived early at the Conwy Marina to get an idea of how it was laid out. After returning to the car, I saw someone unloading equipment into the trolly. I sent a message to tell Maria I had arrived and was in the main car park. As soon a I pressed send I saw who I now know was Maria pick up her phone and read the message.
After a quick introduction we headed over to the marina. I left Maria set up her equipment and meet her team. Whilst this was happening, I met with the harbour master John and explained what we were doing on the day. All documentation had been forwarded before and the on the day the final site inspection was carried out.
Maria and her team began lifting the Oyster Nurseries from under the walkways, these nurseries house 27 oysters ready to reproduce and release oyster larvae for the next generation of oysters to help clean our sea’s.
So why was I there? I am helping the project by recording the work they are doing to produce a short film showing their good work. The flight operation started well with a low wind and overcast skies. After the first battery the wind began picking up, to a point where the wind just to the limit of the operational envelope. With the value of the boats and the swirling winds I called time on the operation. I will be visiting the project next month to get more footage. Safety before risk.
